The St. Nersess the Great Medical Center is currently finishing construction on a new wing of the hospital and undergoing a major renovation to upgrade the entire facility. The work is being completed through the support of the Izmirlian Foundation. St. Nersess the Great Medical Center was founded in 1986 as the Proctology Research Institute. It is located in the Zeitoun district, a suburb of Yerevan. Over the course of years, the Institute focused its services on proctology patient care. In 1990 and 1991, in preparation for an expansion of services, hospital staff, consisting of two plastic surgeons and two anesthesiologists as well as ten nurses, took specialized courses at Yale University for one year. Through the means and efforts of USAID and the Armenian General Benevolent Union (AGBU), the departments of Plastic and General Surgery were established in 1998 and 2000 respectively. In 2000, the Armenian General Benevolent Union (AGBU) privatized the institute. In 2001, the AGBU generously donated the institute to the Mother See of Holy Etchmiadzin, at which time it was renamed the St. Nersess the Great Medical Center. The donation allowed the Armenian Church to continue in her service to the people, and expand the area of social service. Following the privatization of the medical center, the Mother See of Holy Etchmiadzin started a department wide project of providing new technical equipment.
