The reign of Catholicos Gevorg V coincides with the years of the Armenian Genocide. On his initiative, together with non-governmental organizations, the Armenian Church helped thousands of disaster victims. On December 28, 1914, the Fraternal Relief Committee was established under the leadership of Gevorg E. Surenyantsi and under his direct chairmanship, which dealt with the problems of providing aid to wounded Armenian volunteers and tens of thousands of refugee Armenians.
