On May 27, in the Mother See of Holy Etchmiadzin, under the presidency of His Holiness Karekin II, Supreme Patriarch and Catholicos of All Armenians; a meeting of the Supreme Spiritual Council was convened.
The congregation issued a statement.
STATEMENT
Due to the deepening of the crisis created in the country, the police are using clearly disproportionate force against the citizens expressing their peaceful protest these days, with reprehensible manifestations of violence. Similar actions of officers called to maintain public order deepen intra-societal tension and may lead to unpredictable consequences.
It is our appeal to the policemen to respect the fundamental rights, freedoms, honor and dignity of compatriots while performing their duties and to act only with the strict observance of the principles of humanity and legality.
We also urge the participants of public actions to express their protest exclusively within the framework of the law, to be guided by vigilance and not to give in to possible provocations.
At the same time, we command the children of the Armenian Apostolic Holy Church and all our compatriots to show responsibility in this difficult situation and make every effort to overcome the ontological challenges facing the motherland, to preserve and strengthen the Armenian statehood.
May the Almighty God bless and grant peace to our homeland, solidarity and hopeful life to our people.
