New Publication of Monastic Lithography
The Publishing Department of the Mother See of Holy Etchmiadzin has published the book “Vagharshapat: Monasteries and Lapidary Inscriptions” by Mr. Arsen Harutyunyan, epigraphist and candidate of History PhD.
The Book is dedicated to the comprehensive examination of the monasteries lithographic heritage. It is the first comprehensive study, where on the basis of lithography the readers are presented with the political and religious life of Vagharshapat, specifically from the 17-19th centuries; the construction and renovation works of the Armenians Patriarchs; monasteries which received donations; the formation of monastic congregations, as well as Brotherhood cemeteries and inscriptional cross stones. 520 lithographic prints have been added to the 188 previously published, and are for the first time submitted for study.
Through the combination of lithographic and bibliographical sources and archival materials, the life and activity of the donors, benefactors, and often well-known spiritual figures mentioned in the inscriptions were studied. The book also contains photos.
The book was published through the sponsorship of the Sarkis Gabrellian Fund.
