His Holiness Karekin II Receives Council of Europe Secretary General
On July 9, His Holiness Karekin II, Supreme Patriarch and Catholicos of All Armenians, received Walter Schwimmer, Secretary General of the Council of Europe.
His Holiness welcomed Mr. Schwimmer to the Mother See of Holy Etchmiadzin, and introduced him to the 1,700 year history of the spiritual center and headquarters for the worldwide Armenian Church. His Holiness further discussed the present situation of the Church, and the tremendous opportunities she has for the future.
The Catholicos specifically expressed his satisfaction with the Council of Europe, for bringing their assistance to Armenia in the fields of social and economic development, as well as reinforcing the values of democracy in the life of the nation.
During the meeting, the Catholicos and the Secretary General discussed the law regarding freedom of conscience, and its effect on religious entities operating within the Republic of Armenia. To that effect, His Holiness noted, at times the requirements of the Council of Europe have incorrect perceptions and interpretations, which cause difficulties for the free and successful activity of the Armenian Church.
Also discussed was the current situation of the Nagorno Karabagh conflict, and the need for a peaceful and lasting solution to same.
Mr. Schwimmer expressed his gratitude for the audience, and stated that he is well aware of the mission of the Armenian Church, noting that the Council of Europe also commemorated the 1,700 Anniversary of the Great Conversion of Armenia to Christianity.
