His Holiness Karekin II Receives Baroness Caroline Cox
On November 5, His Holiness Karekin II, Supreme Patriarch and Catholicos of All Armenians, received Baroness Caroline Cox, Deputy Speaker of the House of Lords of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. Accompanying her were members of the ?Armenia-Great Britain? Parliamentary Friendship Group, who are in Armenia to celebrate the tenth anniversary of its establishment. The Baroness and the delegation were accompanied by Mr. Tigran Torossian, Deputy Speaker of the National Assembly (Parliament) of the Republic of Armenia, and Mr. Timothy Jones, Ambassador of the United Kingdom to the Republic of Armenia.
His Holiness welcomed the honored guests, and stated that he highly appreciates the role that both Baroness Cox and the ?Armenia-Great Britain? Parliamentary Friendship Group have played in fostering the friendship between the two nations for the past decade. His Holiness specifically noted his gratitude for the contributions Baroness Cox has made to Armenia and Karabagh over the past many years. On behalf of the Armenian Church and the Armenian people, His Holiness expressed his gratefulness for the recent ?Statement of Opinion? on the Armenian Genocide, announced by the National Assembly for Wales. The Catholicos further expressed his conviction that, as a result of this action, one of the gravest crimes ever perpetrated against humanity would be soon be recognized and condemned throughout the entire United Kingdom as well.
During the meeting, His Holiness and the guests discussed the warm, fraternal relations which exist between the Armenian and the Anglican Churches, the rebirth and revitalization of the Armenian Church in post-Soviet times, and current church-state relations.
