Diocese of Gougark to Host Symposium Dedicated to St. John of Odzun
The Armenian Church Diocese of Gougark will host a symposium entitled "St. John of Odzun - the Patriarch and his times". The symposium, scheduled for June 4 and 5, 2003, has been organized under the blessing of His Holiness Karekin II, Supreme Patriarch and Catholicos of All Armenians.
The two-day symposium and conference will take place in the historic Monastery of Haghpat, where more than ten presentations will occur. The lectures will present the works and rich literary treasures of the 8th century Armenian Patriarch. Topics will include "St. John of Odzun and his studies about the two natures of Christ", "St. John of Odzun and the Church Councils", "St. John of Odzun and architecture", and others related to the great patriarch's contributions in the spheres of ecclesiastical painting, cross-stones and culture.
On June 3, prior to the opening of the conference, the participants will meet with His Grace Bishop Sepouh Chuljian, Primate of the Diocese of Gougark. They will also visit the Monastery of Sanahin and the newly constructed St. Gregory of Narek Church in Alaverdi. On the morning of June 4, they will participate in a pilgrimage to Odzun, and to the St. John Church in the village of Ardvi, where the grave of the "Philosopher Catholicos" is located.
