Archbishop Gevork Seraydarian Enters Eternal Rest
It is with deep sorrow that the Mother See of Holy Etchmiadzin conveys the sad news that His Eminence Archbishop Gevork Seraydarian entered his eternal rest in the early morning hours of September 11, 2002, in Tibilisi, Georgia. He was 64 years old. His Eminence was the Primate of the Diocese of Georgia for the past 30 years, and was one of the most senior Bishops of the Armenian Church.
Archbishop Seraydarian (baptismal name Karpis) was born in Bucharest in 1938. He immigrated to Armenia in 1948, and entered the Gevorkian Theological Seminary in 1956. Upon his graduation from seminary, he was ordained a deacon, and entered the holy order of priesthood in 1964. In 1972, upon the Pontifical Encyclical of Catholicos of All Armenians His Holiness Vasken I of blessed memory, he was assigned as the Locum Tenens of the Diocese of Georgia, and became Primate in 1973. That same year, he was consecrated a Bishop by His Holiness Vasken I. In 1995, he was elevated in rank to Archbishop. Abp. Seraydarian had been a past member of the Supreme Spiritual Council. Since 1971, Abp. Seraydarian was the compiler of the official church calendar of the Mother See of Holy Etchmiadzin.
His Holiness Karekin II, Supreme Patriarch and Catholicos of All Armenians, and the Brotherhood of the Mother See of Holy Etchmiadzin, the Staff of the Mother See and the faithful flock mourn the loss of His Eminence, and pray for the repose of his soul. Interment arrangements and services are pending.
