Gevorkian Theological Seminary is the oldest higher educational institution founded in Armenia and still operating today, founded by Gevorg IV, Catholicos of All Armenians of Constantinople in 1874.
Future clergymen study at the Gevorkian Theological Seminary. In this educational and spiritual institution, students are being prepared to perform God-pleasing, soulful service, receiving multifaceted knowledge, studying the rich Armenian spiritual and cultural heritage.
In 1991, after the restoration of Armenia's independence, the building of the Gevorkian Theological Seminary, which was seized by the Soviet Union, was returned to the Armenian Church. In 1996, during the reign of Catholicos of All Armenians Karekin I the renovation works of the seminary building started and were completed in 1997.
In 1999 with the direct participation of Catholicos of All Armenians Karekin II, large-scale organizational and construction works began. The educational program of the theological seminary was completely changed, the students' living conditions were improved, courses were added, and the curriculum was expanded.
In 2002, the Gevorkian Theological Seminary acquired the status of a state higher educational institution. At the initiative of Karekin II, Catholicos of All Armenians, taking into account the updated educational programs, the RA Ministry of Education and Science granted the seminary the status of a theological university. From 2004 to 2007, the Gevorkian Theological Seminary received the right to implement educational programs according to the standards of bachelor's and master's degrees and passed to the two-level system of education accepted in the universities of the Republic of Armenia. Now, students study according to the above programs and receive Bachelor of Theology degrees (in the 4th classroom) and Master's degrees (in the 6th classroom).
In 2016, the seminary received the right to open a postgraduate course by ESCS of the Republic of Armenia, and in 2018 the first graduate students were admitted, and the first academic year at the graduate program began. The seminary is the only university in the entire territory of the Republic of Armenia that can award the degree of Candidate of Theology.
