It was founded in 1990 with the blessings of the late Vazgen I, Catholicos of All Armenians and on the initiative of the Vicar General of the Araratian Pontifical Diocese, His Eminence Archbishop Karekin Nersisyan (1999- Karekin II, Catholicos of All Armenians). It was named Vaskenian Seminary in honor of Vazgen I, Catholicos of All Armenians.
In 1996, the Seminary had its first graduates. From 1996 to 2022, with the efforts of His Holiness Karekin II, Catholicos of All Armenians and through the benevolence of Mr. and Mrs. Garnik and Anahit Yakubyan, the new residential building and the chapel of St. Hakob Mtsbna were built.
Since the 2003 - 2004 academic year, studies at the Vaskenian Theological Seminary are four-year, following which the students continue their two-year master's education at the Gevorkian Theological Seminary.
